Avendar: The Crucible of Legends

What is Avendar? Avendar is a multi-player fantasy roleplaying-oriented
text-based game, in which you, the players, take up the role of heroes (or
villains) in an all-original game world. Through your adventures and
interactions with the world and its inhabitants (and other players!), you
develop your character in terms of power, abilities, and personality.

One of the aspects that seperates Avendar from more traditional hack-n-slash
MUDs is our emphasis on roleplaying. If you're unfamiliar with the term,
this essentially means taking on the role of a character who is different
from yourself, acting without a script. See 'help ROLEPLAYING' for more
information.

This is not to say that roleplaying is the only thing that matters here.
There is combat to be had here, and plenty of it. In your travels around
the world you will find many creatures that you may attempt to slay, and
gain experience while doing so, allowing you to grow more powerful, gaining
new skills and prestige. Keep in mind though, that you must still remain in
character while deciding what to kill -- a noble Champion cannot go around
slaying the guards of a peaceful town.

All of this is done through various commands that you enter to describe
what you intend to do. More often than not, these are very self-apparent.
For example, if you wish to look around, you type 'look'. If you wish to
get something you see in the room, you type 'get' and then the name of the
object. All of these commands are explained in other helpfiles.

Avendar has been created as an almost entirely original fantasy world, by
its designers and developers (who are also called the 'immortals', as they
also play the roles of the various fantasy gods of the world). While using
some of the more traditional ideas of fantasy worlds (martial combat, magic,
real gods, the eternal conflict between good and evil), you will find few
things borrowed from other sources. There are no elves or dwarves here, no
mithril or Drizzt. Our magic system is of our own creation, as is our
histories and stories, all of which are fully explained, either in our
helpfiles, or in actual texts you may found scattered about in your travels.

If you are new to Avendar, you will want to type 'help STORY' to learn more
about the backstory to this world. It is a rather long file, but there is
no more valuable resource for getting to know the world.

Now, return to 'help GETTING STARTED' to learn more about Avendar and how to
play, and we sincerely hope you enjoy your travels!
