In Avendar, characters may attempt to attack and kill (PK) other player's
characters. While non-player characters can be attacked via the KILL
command, PK is typically initiated via the MURDER command or with an
aggressive skill or spell used against another player, with the following

- characters below level 11 cannot engage in PK
- characters whose levels are significantly different cannot engage in PK

There are some exceptions, such as for when characters are affected by
spells such as PACIFY, or when one character has given an OATH to another.

Be aware that city guards in law-observant areas will assist PCs who are
attacked by other PCs, and NPCs in some other places (such as bouncers in
taverns) may also assist. PKing in a law-observant area may have other
consequences--see the LAW and GUARDIAN helpfiles for more information.

Mechanics aside, we have PK in Avendar because we think that any
role-playing environment without it suffers a critical loss. Imagine
playing a holy crusader, dedicated to stamping out any and all evil in the
land. Now, imagine a despicable thief, who makes his living by stealing the
gold of the innocent, and sliding his blade between the ribs of whoever
displeased him. Imagine what would happen if these two met, if PK
Would they just exchange curses? Yell at each other? Why does the warrior
fight if the only evils he can vanquish are the predictable NPC monsters
of the realm? Is the thief doomed to prey only on innocent NPCs while
PCs thumb their noses without consequence?

We believe that a world without playerkilling is a world without the
vibrancy that a real world *should* have. In order to really play the
roles you've chosen for yourself in our fantasy world, you need to be
able to really interact with others. For this to happen, this interaction
has to occur on a more than superficial level - one player has to be able
to threaten what the other holds most dear, and the stuff that really
matters, such as the ideals of the participants, get played out along
this backdrop. Players can live, breathe, fight, and die in Avendar,
and that's the world the way we like it.
