The high priestess of the seraphim, Nelowesh, is perhaps possessed of a greater skill in the binding and shaping of energy than any other known being shy of the divine. Those who fall under her patronage learn a portion of this skill, developing the ability to bind quintessence into mundane objects, suffusing them with newfound power. Most objects may be so bound exactly once, though the items created by the work essence spell are exceptions to this: the Chalice of Truth, Chaplet of Fervor, and Lens of Divination may not be bound at all. On the other hand, the Celestial Bulwark, Ethereal Skean, and Rod of Transcendence may be bound an arbitrary number of times.

Each time the Celestial Bulwark is infused with new essence, it gains in armor class and has a chance of improving in resistances or bonuses to hit points. Furthermore, each binding increases its odds of negating damage from unholy sources, though with diminishing returns.

Each binding of the ethereal skean fully repairs it, and may improve the hitroll or damroll of the dagger. Furthermore, the first several bindings will increase its power to do damage.

The first several bindings of the Rod of Transcendence will also increase its damage. Each such infusion of quintessence will furthermore increase the odds of the Rod improving the efficiency of spellcasting, and may permanently bless it, render it indestructible by normal means, or make it impossible to disarm.

For objects not created by work essence, the effect of the binding varies according to type. Weapons will become permanently consecrated, dealing holy damage from then on. Items worn on the head will offer a certain clarity to a mage, increasing the effective level of spirit spells cast by the wearer. Gloves and other items worn on the hands will increase slightly all holy type damage done by the person wearing them.

Items work on the neck will improve the bearer's saving against spells when bound, while items such as breastplates worn directly on the torso grant a bonus to hit points after being so enhanced. Binding cloaks and other objects worn about one's body will offer a resistance to negative damage, while infusing quintessence into boots and other such items worn on the feet will grant a bonus to moves. All other items, once bound, will enhance the wearer's mana.

Note that any binding of essence requires two sources of Quintessence.
