As a mortal, the seraph Shathalith was reknowned for his unparalleled mastery of portal magics; even Rystaia herself consulted him on the subject. Those who fall under his patronage now find themselves privy to a small portion of that knowledge, eventually developing the ability to open doors through the astral plane. The forge postern spell creates a portal which, by itself, does nothing. The mage may then proceed to open a second portal, linking the two places together so that anyone entering either portal will be instantly transported to the other one. The caster may then proceed to open further posterns through the planes, each one a new link in the chain permitting transit to potentially a great many places.
While posterns can be created most anywhere, some places will by their very natures inhibit such magics. Opening a passage through space is potent magic indeed, and requires the use of quintessence; however, should the caster create the postern over a positive ley line there is a small chance he may be able to draw the required quintessence from it rather than consume any stores he may carry. Though much research has been done to make these passages permanent, little progress has been made; while durable, they will eventually crumble. Some argue that this is a good thing, and that mortal magics should not try to thwart the self-healing properties of the universe.
Once created, the portal may be closed before it would naturally crumble by use of the 'seal postern' spell.
