Laws and justice
The laws are as follows. These laws apply to any region which has been designated by the Guardians, and will be enforced mercilessly. Any who break the law will be marked for a Reward. They will then be hunted by the Guardians, and by many of the land, for the god Iandir will reward their killer. For more information about rewards and those who may receive them, read the scroll entitled "help reward."
The laws of the Guardians apply to students and graduates of the School of Heroes only (PCs). NPCs have their own means of addressing undesirable behaviour (see HELP FACTION). The laws of the Guardians explicitly and solely address the actions of the adventurer social classes (again, PCs).
In this document, the term 'criminal' specifically and solely applies to a PC who is marked for a reward. 'Marked' and 'criminal' will be used interchangeably.
Areas designated as law-observant are as follows: Var Bandor, Krilin Fortress, Earendam, the Earendam Library, Merchant Headquarters, the Patrician's Palace, the Hakurah Monastery, and the Hall of Law.
1. Any PC who attacks another PC in a law-observant area will be marked for a reward. Members of the Guardians may attack one who has been marked at any time, for it is their calling to punish the law-breakers. Guardians may choose to deputize non-chaotic people, who are then temporarily allowed to attack criminals in law-observant areas. Members of House Raider may never be deputized. These are the only exceptions.
2. Any PC who steals or attempts to steal from another PC within a law- observant area will be marked for a reward.
The following offenses will be considered theft: Taking items from another PC's corpse without the owner's consent, taking items from the corpse of a recently-slain criminal (including one's own) without the explicit permission of a Guardian, stealing items from another PC's pet, elemental, retainer, golem, or other charmed follower (or the corpse thereof), and the actual act of stealing an item from another PC's possession.
Defacing a corpse (eg, trophy or erosive poison) does not constitute theft.
Members of the Guardians of Law, or deputies operating under the instructions of a member of the Guardians of Law may at times take items from a PC's corpse in the line of duty. This includes holding items to prevent theft and confiscating items to punish an offender.
Members of the Guardians of Law may deputize a PC for this purpose even if they did not assist in the creation of this corpse, but again, they must be non-chaotic and not a member of the Raiders.
3. Any PC who attacks a guildguard that is within a law-observant area, or the guard of any of the Guardian offices be marked for a reward.
Guardians of Law may attack guildguards in pursuit of criminals.
4. Any non-Guardian who enters the Hall of Law will be marked for a reward, even if they were a ghost at the time they did so.
5. Any person who recklessly uses a deadly skill within a law-observant area will be marked for a reward.
A deadly skill will be defined as a skill or spell that can cause bodily damage to a person or instigate combat.
Reckless use will be defined as use that has the potential to affect bystanders (eg, area-affect spells). Such skills do not need to actually affect bystanders; simply used.
Included are skills that make an area dangerous to travel, such as Wall of Fire or damaging traps.
6. Any PC who aids a marked person within a law-observant area will also be marked for a reward.
This includes supplying the marked person with potions, scrolls, healing, refreshment, food, water, weapons, armor, killing guards for and/or with them, and other means of aid. Those who choose a marked person as a travelling companion are advised to be very cautious, lest they run afoul of the law.
Reward
Those in violation of the laws set forth by the Guardians of Law
are marked as targets of Iandir's wrath by the appearance of (REWARD)
upon their person. Any citizen of Avendar who takes the life of such a
criminal is bestowed a divine gift from Iandir.
For those who have not reached the rank of hero, the reward takes
the form of battle experience, aiding them in attaining their next rank.
For those who have reached the rank of hero, the reward takes the form
of partial practice sessions.
Bounty
- Syntax
bounty <person> <amount in platinum>- See also
- inquire
Notorious bounty hunters, the watcher guilds and the monolithic Office of Records offer an anonymous escrow service for the purposes of maintaining bounties on individuals. Watchers may place a bounty upon a person, and whoever should kill that person will receive that amount of money deposited into their bank account.
Multiple bounties may be placed upon the same person; the totals are cumulative. To learn who has a bounty placed upon their head, one need simply go to the entrance of most any watcher guild and read the signs posted there. One cannot determine if a bounty has been placed on a person that one cannot see; if they are invisible and you cannot detect them, you will not be able to see if they have a price on their head.
The sponsor of a given bounty is never revealed. The watcher placing the bounty need not have the money on hand; the guild's agents are perfectly capable of drawing directly from the user's bank account.
A watcher must be at least level 40 to place a bounty.
