Once you learn a spell, you are able to cast it immediately, if at a vastly reduced caster level. Practicing a spell will vastly increase the magnitude of the spell, by raising the level you are casting at. Casting spells costs mana. This mana cost decreases as level increases; scholars always pay the minimum cost.

The <target> is optional. Offensive spells will typically target one's immediate opponent in combat, and defensive spells will usually target the self by default.

If the spell name is more than one word, then you must quote the spell name. Example: cast 'cure critic' Bob. Quoting is optional for single-word spells. You can abbreviate the spell name, as above.

When you cast an offensive spell, the victim usually gets a saving throw. The effect of the spell is reduced or eliminated if the victim makes the saving throw successfully.

A spell will always succeed when cast, unless the caster is in combat-- at that point the success comes down to the concentration skill.

It is not possible to exceed one's base character level as caster level through spell percentage.
