Talking and roleplay

Communication is the most essential part of your interactions in Avendar. You may communicate with others in a number of different ways, to express yourself in the role you have chosen. Bear in mind that all communication while in Avendar should be In Character (in other words, in the role of your character), unless you are using the 'ooc' chat channel. The basic commands used for communicating are:
say, esay, tell, gtell, yell, think, emote, pmote, smote, ooc
Please view the helps for the above commands for details on their usages.
As well, certain characters will have access to the following communication commands:
dt (for druids using 'commune with nature'), sing (for bards), and ht/house (for characters who are members of one of Avendar's houses.
Gtell reply say tell yell
- Syntax
gtell <message>say <message>tell <character> <message>yell <message>- See also
- help name completion
All of these commands send messages to other players. GTELL sends a message to all of the characters in your group, wherever they are, even if they are sleeping or stunned or dying. ';' and 'gt' are synonymous with 'GTELL'.
YELL sends a message to all players within your current area.
SAY sends a message to all awake players in your room. The single quote (') is a synonym for SAY.
TELL sends a message to one awake player anywhere in the world.
REPLY sends a message to the last player who sent you a TELL. REPLY will work even if you can't see the player, and without revealing their identity. This is handy for talking to invisible or switched immortal players.

Emote
- Syntax
emote <message>- See also
- help roleplaying guidelines
The emote command works by emoting an action that you
do to the rest of the room.
Example:
If your name is Jolinn, and you type:
Emote rambles on and on about killing arch-devils.
Everyone else in the room would see:
"Jolinn rambles on and on about killing arch-devils.",
thereby "emoting" the action to the rest of the room.
See also: help PMOTE SMOTE
---
Use emote primarily to show what your character does.
Be careful not to force actions onto other characters
through emote.
Not acceptable: "Emote punches/rapes/blinds you."
These sorts of actions are not a valid use of emote as you are unfairly predetermining an outcome for the action, and not allowing the other player to avoid or otherwise respond to the attempt.
Pmote
- Syntax
pmote <message>- See also
- help emote smote
The pmote command is similar to the EMOTE command, with the following exception: every occurence of a person's name in a pmote string is replaced by the appropriate pronoun.
Ex:
Three players, Iandir, Jolinn, and Aeolis are standing in a room.
Iandir types:
pmote looks at Jolinn.
Jolinn sees:
Iandir looks at you.
Iandir sees:
Iandir looks at Jolinn.
Aeolis sees:
Iandir looks at Jolinn.
Ex:
Same people as before.
Iandir types:
pmote looks at Jolinn's boots.
Jolinn sees:
Iandir looks at your boots.
Iandir sees:
Iandir looks at Jolinn's boots.
Aeolis sees:
Iandir looks at Jolinn's boots.
Smote
- Syntax
smote <action>
Smote works exactly like emote, except you must place your name somewhere in the string, and it will show that string to everyone in the room.
Pose
- Syntax
pose <message>pose clearpose
The pose command will set what others see when they look at/scan into the room you are in. This will always be prefaced by your current position.
Example:
If your name is Jolinn, and you type:
pose leaning on his sapphire spear.
Those who look at the room or scan into the room will see: Jolinn the alatharya is standing here, leaning on his sapphire spear.
Typing "pose" by itself will show your current pose, and typing "pose clear" will remove your current pose. Your pose will automatically clear itself when you change position (sitting/standing/sleeping/resting/fighting/dying) and/or when you leave the room you are in.
---
Utilize this in the same manner as the emote commands. Do not use this to force actions onto other characters, as this should be utilized to more clearly define your current stance to others who can see you.
ESAY (emotive say)
- Syntax
esay "<emote>" <text>
Use this command to replace the normal 'say' with whatever form of speaking you wish to express. Multiple words must be placed in single quotes, but phrases that would include an apostrophe need to be placed between double quotes. If you are speaking in the common language, no comma will be be included between your emote and your speech, but one will be placed for other languages.
We strongly advise against aliasing the say command to a given, static esay. After all, nobody speaks with the same inflection at all times! There is nothing wrong with using the 'say' command if you have nothing to add emotively or inflectionally to your statements. Esay is for adding interest or flavour to your says. If you use the same esay constantly by default, you add neither of those in any appreciable amount, and make yourself look as though you are cutting corners.
Examples: esay hisses Greetings, Immortal.
esay 'says quietly' Greetings, Immortal.
esay "bows in Jolinn's presence, saying" Greetings, Immortal.
Think
- Syntax
think <thought>
The think command is a roleplaying tool, for your character to think about his actions, or make observations. Immortals view all uses of think, so they will notice your character's thoughts.
Characters playing exceptional roles are encouraged to use the think command, so immortals will know what they're up to.
Oocreply
- Syntax
oocreply <message>- See also
- ooc
OOCREPLY sends an out-of-character (OOC) message to the last player who sent you an OOC. OOCREPLY will work even if you can't see the player, and without revealing their identity. This is handy for talking to invisible or switched immortal players. As with direct OOCs, messages sent using this command should be strictly out of character.
Pray
- Syntax
pray <message>
This command sends a message to all staff members presently in Avendar. You may use the command for one of two reasons:
1. Roleplay
This roleplayed communication can serve as a "heads up" to the staff about your worship of a deity, drawing notice to a particular act of worship, sacrifice, or other notable RP moment that reflect your adherence to the deity's tenets. This is particular encouraged if your character is attempting to garner a deity's special favor or sigil.
Naturally, you should include the name of the deity to whom you pray within the text of the prayer message.
2. Contact the Staff We appreciate your help in bring problems to our attention so that we can all enjoy a high-quality, fun, and fair game experience. You may also send a note to IMMORTAL if preferred (or if you receive no response to your prayer).
DON'T pray about: equipment requests, restores or heals, to be rescued if
you are lost and/or stuck, being PKilled or looted
(unless multikilling is in question), etc. The staff
does not become involved in such situations.
DO pray about: bugs, players violating rules, if you are in an apparently
off-limits OOC area, sudden changes to stats that shouldn't
have happened, etc.
The staff can also respond to general questions about the game, but please make some effort to answer them yourself via the newbie channel, the helpfiles, or the website, before taking the staff's time away from their other efforts.
Two final notes about pray:
- DO NOT SPAM prays, for whatever reason.
- the syntax for 'praying for transportation' is "recall.
Notes

- notify
The notes on Avendar replace the bulletin boards and mail systems found on many other muds. The following options are usable:
reading notes:
note list : show all notes (unread notes are marked with an N)
note read : either by number, or read next to read unread notes
note remove : removes a note that you wrote or are the target of
note catchup : markes all notes as read
writing new notes:
note to : sets the to line (playername, housename, immortal, or all)
note subject : sets the subject for a new note
note + : adds a line to a new note (i.e. note + hi guys!)
note - : remove a line from a note in progress
note edit : edit the body of your note*
note clear : erase a note in progress
note reply : replies to the last note you read
note replyall : replies to last note you read, copying all recepients
note show : shows the note you are working on
note post : posts a new note. This MUST be done to post a note.
- Of particular importance is the 'note edit' command. The editor will allow you to enter the body of your note directly, and to format your note. For help on the editor, see help EDITOR.
Note REPLY and REPLYALL may be given a parameter of a message number to specify a message other than the last read to reply to.
Additionally, if you place the word 'hidden' into the list of recipients (eg, "note to hidden Iandir Jolinn Guardian immortal"), other PCs will not be able to see the to-list of your note.
When you log in, you will be informed if there are unread notes waiting. Type note read to scroll through them one at a time.
