After an apprenticeship spent dealing regularly with lightning, a journeyman of air begins to learn the art of shockcraft, a more nuanced training in the handling of electrical energy. This skill may be used in one of two ways, charging or discharging, with discharging being the default set upon learning the skill or upon death. To change modes, the mage may use the command with the CHARGE or DISCHARGE argument, as appropriate; with no argument, the command will display the current mode.

While charging, a portion of any electrical damage the scholar takes will be redirected to her inner core, save for any directly originating from her. This has the effect of both reducing the damage and also charging her core, increasing her maximum mana. There is a limit, however, to the amount which may be charged up, a limit which increases with level. Once exceeded, any additional charging runs a high risk of bursting out of the mage's control, dealing extreme and generally lethal amounts of electrical damage to her, and possibly harming others in the same room. Thus the mage is cautioned to change to discharging before this point.

While discharging, any electrical damage dealt by the caster will be empowered and increased by the pent-up charge, which will drain down as it is used up. The reduction to electrical damage does not apply in this mode. In addition to the primary use above, this skill also grants immunity to the item-destroying effects of sparking cloud, as well as to the lightning vulnerability caused by ionize. These immunities apply at all times, regardless of whether charging or discharging.
