Avendar

Advancement

In Avendar your character's base power is determined primarily by your level and skills. Levels are gained by meeting both experience and exploration point goals. See 'help EXPERIENCE' and 'help EXPLORATION' for more details on how these are acquired.

Once you gain levels, new skills and powers may become available to you. The 'skills' command will show you a list of skills you possess, and what levels they become available. Depending on your class, you will gain other abilities that you may display via the following commands:

spells (scholars, templars, druids)
abilities (psionicists, assassins)
forms (swordmasters, some templars)
songs (bards, some scholars)

** (for the remainder of this help, 'skills' will refer to any of the above)

You may also use the 'practice' command to see a full list of skills, and your percentages in them.

There are two ways to gain knowledge in these skills once they become available to you. First, you may learn by visiting one of your guildmasters and practicing with them. See 'help GUILDMASTERS' for assistance in finding the well-known guildmasters for your class, and 'help PRACTICE' for details on how to practice.

As well, your skills can increase as you use them. Every time a skill is used, there is a small chance you will be notified that you have improved. It is easier to learn from failures than successes. Skills become more difficult to improve at as you become more adept.

Another way your character improves is by gaining attributes, in the form of trains. These are also used at your guildmasters. See 'help TRAIN' for more information.

Levels

Advancement in Avendar in a given class is done via the means of attaining levels. Levels are awarded for acquiring experience, and give access to new spells/skills, along with hit point, mana, and movement bonuses.

Experience

Your character advances in power by gaining experience. The amount of experience you need to advance a level will increase as your level increases.

You gain experience by:
     * Being part of a group that kills a monster
     * Gaining mastery of a skill
     * Completing certain quests or tasks
     * Exploring new places
You lose experience if:
     * You and the mobile you kill are both good-aligned
The experience you get from a kill depends on several things:
     * How many players are in your group, and their levels
     * Your level versus the level of the creature
     * Your alignment versus the creature's alignment
     * Some random variation.

Additionally, there are some creatures of great power which will take you much longer to kill than regular foes. If you are successful in slaying such foes, you may find that you learn substantially more experience than is normal.

Working in a group may be the most effective way of gaining experience. However, the amount of experience you earn will decrease for each person in your group after the first three; thus, the optimum group size for earning experience is three, though groups both larger and smaller have been known to be effective as well. Note that charmed mobiles in your group do not count against the group total for purposes for experience.

While anyone may group with anyone else who is willing, experience will be doled out according to group contribution. For example, a level 10 who is grouped with a level 50 will receive significantly less experience for the same kill than if he were grouped with a level 20 instead. On the other hand, the level 50 could help him kill much larger prey, and thus may (or may not) ultimately prove a more useful groupmate.

Exploration Points

In order to attain the next level, you must do more than acquire the requisite experience points. You must also obtain the requisite exploration points (ep for short).

A character acquires exploration points by visiting rooms. Ep are only gained on the first visit to a room. Some rooms or areas are more dangerous than others, and will give more ep when visited. In brief mode, rooms do not count as being visited. A total of 4500 EP is required in order to achieve level 51.

-----

Syntax: EP

The 'EP' command toggles notification of exploration points on and off.

Practice

Practice, without an argument, tells you your current level in all the abilities (skills, spells, forms, foci, or songs) available to you. You can check this anywhere.

Practice with an argument practices that ability, if done at a guildmaster who can teach that ability. Practicing will raise the ability to 75%. Increasing an ability beyond 75% comes only through use of the ability.

Many spells that are unique to greater spheres are not taught in all guilds. For those seeking to learn such spells, they will have to search in appropriate places for a teacher. Advice from your guildmaster and the helpfiles for each scholar class will provide some basic indications as to where to look.

Train

god touch, trait

During character generation, all PCs will receive 5 training points to spend on feats of their choice. It is not possible to spend these points on anything else, or retain them past character generation, so we encourage you to spend them all.

Gain Convert

train practice

This skill allows a player to convert their practices into training, at the rate of 10 practices into one train, or vice versa.

You must be at an appropriate mob to use this skill. Guildmasters in larger cities (such as Var Bandor) can all help you convert your practices into training.

Your Title

level

Every character's title is derived from their class and level, changing each time level goes up. Titles may also be granted for various in-game accomplishments, such as quest participation or joining certain of the great houses.

As titles are generally granted by guilds or other external renown, they are not selectable by the player.

All scholars which study a given sphere are admitted into that sphere's guilds. Thus, all mixed sphere scholars can enter and practice at both their major and minor guilds as they choose.
