Scholar
- Syntax
bleed self
The bleed command allows a living scholar to extract a quantity of their own blood. A glass vial will be needed to store the blood properly. It would be possible to drink this blood, though one would not get more than a sip.
Greater Spells
Scholars who choose both their major and minor spheres of influence in a single element are given greater access to their chosen element. Spells from the greater sphere tend to be more powerful, and represent the pinnacle of the powers of a given element. Greater spells tend to be more difficult to find, and are often not taught by the common guildmasters of most cities.
Major Spells
Scholars choose both a major and minor element to learn from. The choice of a major element determines where most of the scholars spells derive from, and serves as the scholar's principle focus.
Minor Spells
Scholars choose both a major and minor element to learn from. The choice of a minor element determines a smaller component of the scholar's spell repertoire than the major choice, furnishing the scholar with a chance to gain more variety in spell types.
In some cases, choosing a minor which differs from the major will make certain 'mixed-sphere' abilities available; for example, majoring in fire and minoring in earth opens up the capacity to summon elementals of lava. On the other hand, choosing a minor to be the same as the major will open up the chosen sphere's greater spells, which offer powerful control over that sphere's element.
Runes

Runic magic is well-known to many spheres, but none study it so deeply as the magi of earth. Many such wizards believe these runes to be the written form of the true names of the concepts they represent, as originally inscribed by the ancient alatharya in the days before the Sundering. Whether this is true is up for debate, but there is decidedly less dispute concerning the utility of runic magic.
Those who are learned in STONECRAFT may carve and invoke the simplest runes, those consisting of only a single syllable. The training afforded to STONESHAPERs indoctrinates them into the mysteries of polysyllabic runes, while those possessed of skills in RUNECRAFT will find their magics bolstered. While most runes may only be employed in stone objects, training in the FORGEMASTER skill will permit carving and invoking them in metal item as well.
To see a list of known, invoked, and invokable runes, a mage with at least training in STONECRAFT should use the 'rune list' command. To invoke a rune, he should use the 'rune invoke' command, specifying either the number of the rune as listed in 'rune list', or the object upon which the rune is carved. Only runes on objects worn or carried by the mage may be invoked, though they may then be handed to another. To revoke a rune, the mage should use the 'rune revoke' command, specifying either the number of the rune as listed in 'rune list', or the object upon which the rune is carved. If the mage is not carrying or wearing the object, he MUST specify the rune by number.
Invoking and maintaining runes takes energy; while the rune is invoked, the caster will suffer a penalty to his maximum mana until such time as it is revoked. The more complex the rune, the more mana is required to sustain it; in particular:
+-----------+-----------+
| Syllables | Mana Cost |
+-----------+-----------+
| 1 | 100 |
| 2 | 200 |
| 3 | 400 |
| 4 | 800 |
+-----------+-----------+
Multiple runes of any given type may be invoked simultaneously for increased benefits; many runes, however, offer diminishing returns as more are activated. In addition to increasing the number of invoked runes, a scholar may seek training in the RUNECRAFT skill, which can increase the benefits of his invoked runes, sometimes adding secondary effects. All runes are automatically revoked upon logoff.
Anyone may benefit from an invoked rune, not just the mage who is powering it. However, the runed object must be both invoked and worn -- not just carried -- to be of use.
